There are days when I’m so lazy I just want to stay in bed and pass time watching old movies. Almost always, I prefer watching romantic comedy movies. They’re light and perfect for de-stressing.
Here are 5 of my most favorite romantic comedies. By favorite, I mean I have watched it more than a few times and I intend to watch it again and again.
1. Notting Hill (1999)

Although Anna Scott (Julia Roberts) breaks William Thacker’s (Hugh Grant) heart 3 times in the story, it all ends well with Anna’s power quote “I’m also just a girl, standing in front of a boy, asking him to love her.” The film also shows how true love can cross boundaries. I also love the film’s music, which included the songs “She”, “You Got A Way With Me” and “When You Say Nothing At All”.
2. Never Been Kissed (1999)

Drew Barrymore is really funny here as Josie Geller, the nerdy girl whose high school memories included being thrown an egg by the hottest guy in school, who invited her to the prom only as a joke. Her second shot at high school, as an undercover reporter, leads her to finding her true love, English teacher Sam Coulson (Michael Vartan), and her first real kiss in the middle of a baseball field.
3. Kate and Leopold (2001)

I have to admit I’m no Meg Ryan fan (since her acting does not really change much from one film to another), but Hugh Jackman is so adorable in this movie that I am willing to forget it’s Meg Ryan opposite him. There is somewhat a chicken-or-egg dilemma in the story. Leopold chased Stuart, who took photos of a party in the 1870s, from the 19th to the 21st century. In the 21st century, he met and fell in love with Kate. Yet, at the film’s near-end, it was revealed that Kate was already in the photos taken by Stuart in the party, prompting them to believe that she is destined to be in that era.
4. Maid in Manhattan (2002)

I cannot remember how many times I have seen this movie. It’s a modern Cinderella story, where Marisa Ventura (Jennifer Lopez) meets her prince charming, senatorial candidate Christopher Marshall (Ralph Fiennes). It is not only a beautiful love story, it is also a story of courage and hope as Marissa strives to rise up from being a maid to a hotel manager.
5. Two Weeks Notice (2002)

This was an easy one. I love Sandra Bullock and I almost always enjoy Hugh Grant’s rom-com films. Sandra Bullock was cute as the brilliant but neurotic attorney Lucy Kelson, while Hugh Grant was charming as the immature billionaire George Wade.

So, there goes my favorite decade-old movies. Let me emphasize that this list does not include my favorite romantic (not rom-com) films, such as Pride and Prejudice and A Walk To Remember, or my favorite rom-coms of recent time, such as The Proposal and When In Rome; the list only has romantic comedies that are around a decade old.
Comments are welcome. Just remember that this is my personal list. I would love to know your personal favorites. Share them by dropping a comment below.
